I'm not trying to sway your opinion, but I would like to point out that the Harpoon series and the Sonalysts games have made a pretty good living doing smaller real world combat scenarios and larger hypothetical combat scenarios. I particularly enjoy the conventional arms WWIII variants set in the 70's and 80's. Putting the player in a position where your actions (and potential mistakes) have you dancing on the edge of nuclear war can add an additional element of game play.

That said, I think this is a case of been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

However, a WWIII scenario set in the 50's and 60's could be quite interesting as well... and as far as I know, that hasn't been done.

The problem here IMHO is that the assumption that UBI and the SH devs have any sort of leg up or experience in this area based on that series is not valid. Submarine warfare c 1945 and submarine warfare c 1960 are two totally different animals. Radically different technology, operations, strategy and tactics would have them starting from scratch... with the possible exception of the graphics and physics engines.
