I've seen this happen several times, even with flower corvettes in very rough weather, they simply can't make enough speed to get away.
Crewing on an armed trawler is a thankless job anyhow, they're not really warships after all and can't stand up to anything that is, I once took the time to look up a list of ships lost by the Royal Navy during WW2 and the humble armed trawler had a disproportionate number lost.
If you compare the firepower on a Liberty Ship to an armed trawler you'll notice the Liberty Ship is far more dangerous in a surface engagement

Now that makes sense I had the same experience on the weekend. He just sat there so I sank him. Which turned out to be a dumb move. As I was returning to my grid I spied a Large Merchant and I only had 1 eel left in the tube. Managed to hit it but it didnt sink. Lesson learned
