He seems pretty neutral in the movie, but then he's played by Sidney Poitier, who excels at the 'everyman, imagine yourself in this character's place' acting style. Well, there's one exception...when he interviews Finlander, there's a great reversal when the reporter sort of assumes the predator role and the Captain is suddenly squirming as hard as the submarine to get away.

Foreshadowed the end of the movie, in a way, since the Soviet captain...well, I imagined him reacting to the Bedford's harassment in much the same was as Finlander reacted to Munceford.

Despite the technical problems that the sub firing nuke fish presents (failsafe's and such), I think I prefer them being nuclear.

I'll have to give the novel a read, though.
