The company was the
Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, or BFW (in English the Bavarian Aircraft Works). Willy Messerschmitt was the chief designer. In 1938 he was made the head of the factory, and it was renamed the
Messerschmitt-Aitken-Gesellschaft.
Aircraft
designed before June 1, 1938 were designated Bf; designs after that time were Me. The first design to be officially called by that title was the Me-163 rocket fighter.
It doesn't really matter that much; I just like to get it right when I can.
