Are you sure it wasnt a single accident?
This has happen to me only once, in 2005, when i was playing sh3 without any mods. The weather was very bad and i literally woke up in the middle of a convoy... ahh memories...
Edit: OR - do you mean THEy spotted YOU at 5-6 km?
