As far as I have seen it does, and I do save a lot in the middle of the action. But some reports indicate that reloading a save may lose some information sometimes.

You get credit only once you get the "she's going down" message - which indicates that the ship is irreversibly sinking. At that point the credit shows in the patrol log page - even if it may still take some time for the ship to fully sink. Once you get the entry in the log, the credit is yours and saving/reload won't change that
