I believe this is because 60 hz is right at the edge of where the human eye can still detect the flicker. Especially with a CRT (I guess with an LCD as well), and with bright colors.

With my old CRT, anytime I played at 60 hz, I could notice the flickering or pulsing of the bright colors. Some people argue it isn't there, you can't see it, etc. But it most certainly is there, and noticable. I wouldn't waste my time 'imagining it'.

And I always wanted to play at higher resolutions, but I couldn't because at higher res, my monitor would only do 60 hz.

If you were getting headaches at 60hz, it's because your optic nerve was pulsing with the refresh flicker, even if you didn't consciously realize it.
