On your point about the "suicidal" pilots and their planes, it is indeed somewhat of a bug, more of an annoyance actually. On numerous occasions I've had bombers forget to pull out of their dives on my sub only to become "one with the water..". Hardly the best of the IJN..
Although it would be nice to get renown points for picking up the crews of downed pilots.. it is impossible however because sadly they all commit to
Seppuku on the way home
... If only that were it.. It is in fact, impossible (at least in my attempts and experiences.. I usually opt to avoid A/C) to pick up downed pilots.
