Hehehe, know the feeling. Though, not from aircraft, I'm allergic to them and got this annoying habit of always, and without exception, diving to at least 30 meters at first contact.
But I had a little experience not that long ago, doing surface attack on a 2 boat convoy of passenger liners that was entirely defenseless. Short on fishes I had to get real close to make sure each hit. Some bad navigating later (and busy at the deck gun), I found myself on a crash course with the front liner...
Lot of noise later, but no damage. That liner should have cut my sub in half just aft of the conning tower. Something is not right.
