I thought exactly the same like you, until I - don't ask me why - got this sim four years ago. When I said it is dogfighting in two dimension, I did not make a joke. It's extremely difficult, too, due to the surprisingly low grip, the very high speed, and the extreme closeness to other cars. Error margin is very low.

This is a very good race sim, and with extremly well done physics. After the publisher stopped selling it, it was sold at ebay for up to 200 dollars. But meanwhil that has gone done again, of course.

Like it was with American Football. I will never be the great fan of it, but playing an according sim made me curious enough to buy a book and learn about the idea, concept, tactics, team structures, rules. Different to cricket , I understand the basics and the idea of A.F. thoroughly, it's just that I can't get fun out of it for longer than 20 minutes. The many interruptions are what kills it for me - not the game itself.

The one American obsession I never got warm with is Baseball. It send me sleeping even if they are doing something they consider to be dramatic.
