In the real world this is how im sure they would have done it, being at slow speed would have been important to get best results for the sea underwater conditions.
In SH3 GWX most of my war has so far been off the east coast of Britain and there I often submerge and listen for contacts at a depth of 25m due to how shallow it is there. Normally I can pick up a contact upto around 30 km away. If I then go to periscope depth I have had sound contacts that were far away fade and become inaudable (if there is such a word, dont look right probably spelt it wrong!!)
What I have noticed it that often I must take control of the hydrophones and listen because if I ask the sonar operator he reports "no sound contact", I think he is a bit deaf because sometimes I check and find very slight sound contact on what ever bearing these often prove to be genuine.
Between 25-35m Thats what I do!
