For the severity of the infraction I think the penalty was pretty harsh. It's not like coaches don't change their signals, and it's not like it gave them some huge advantage. To lose a first round pick is pretty substantial (because we all know the pats are going to make the playoffs) and $500,000 is no drop in the bucket, even for a well paid coach. I mean, if anything I think the comissioner was so harsh because of the principle of the violation, rather than the violation itself. I mean, technically what they were doing was cheating, regardless of how little advantage they actually gained. I think that's why he made the punishment as harsh as he did. In the grand scheme of things though, stealing defensive signals is pretty tame in my opinion.
