All the submarines in the museum are in their late war, 1945, configuration. If you notice all the boats, even the earlier pre war ones, have cut down conning towers, grey paint schemes etc. The Balao class often mounted a second deck gun at the end of the war. Think it was because the Japanese had lost so much merchant tonnage that they were increasingly using smaller 1000 ton, and below, 'sea trucks' and the like which made viable tagets to sink with gunfire.
