there are 2 usual types of missions one is the star that says you need to go here and then once you reach it it turns gray and you get a message saying that you need to sink enemy merchants.

Then there is the patrol mission where you need to stay on station in an area about 50nm within that spot for 48 hours then it turns gray and you can send a status report and recieve a new mission if you have enough torpedo's on board at least 6 I think is needed to get a new mission. You do not have to move or patrol around on that 48 hour mission just have to be in that area for 48 hours so don't waste fuel unless going after something in the 50 nm radius. That symbol looks like binoc's I beleve vs the star one.
