Don't despair, its happend to me on a few occasions. A good example is form my last patrol which i've just completed in my type VII/C. Got to my patrol grid with no ships sighted - completed patrol, still no ships.
On the way back got to BF15, I managed to sink a large tanker, and a large merchant for 28040 tons.
