This was exceptionally informative Zantham, thanks a lot. I figured if I downgraded my CPU choice to a 4600+ I could afford a GB or two of DDR2-800 depending where I shop.
If anyone else has been tuned into this thread,
this page seems handy for figuring out where to start when looking for a power supply. For a 4600+ system with two sticks of DDR2, an x1950 PRO, a SATA drive, a DVD-ROM drive and combo rewriter, a PCI NIC, and a couple of fans all at peak usage, it recommended something between 400 and 450 watts.
