Try to torp the corvette. It would make your original task way less complicated in this situation as you don't have to sneak away and get into position again.
If the flower is gone, you can STAY in your attack position when not having to evade detection or an attack.
I wouldn't risk a surface fight though. It may work many times this early but bad luck can happen to every one. So don't risk the lives of your crew and go for a torpedo attack

You have relatively free hands there. Your main order is to sink merchants, right. But those orders can't be THAT specific and exclusive. It depends heavily on the situation you're in. And in some cases it's better to waste one torpedo for something you're not directly ordered if your main task can profit from that.
