is it just me or do they not fall out of the formation?

in SH3, if i wounded a ship i'd tail the convoy from long range and wait for him to lag far enough back to sink it. but in SHIV they always seem to keep up.

i've tailed many a convoy for a long distance hoping to find my straggler.. but all i find is the tail end destroyers and no straggler.
