On contemporary platforms yes. I dont think they had this technology in WW2.
They also have broad spectrum pings that actually sweep from sub sonic to ultra sonic and everything in between.
As far as being able to hear the ping without sonar... if you were close enough you could actually feel the ping but youd have to be very close indeed.
They (the opponent) should not reasonably solve a bearing with a single ping but it damn sure lets them know something is out there.
