The newest patches give a massive boost to performance. Update your drivers, and if you can play NWN1 well, NwN2 will run ok if you crank the options down.
The single-player campaign was pretty decent up until the very end of the game. The very last dungeon is a massive turd in the D&D game genre. The trick to the single-player campaign is using the command line to allow 6 party members. When everyone gets their "party banter" lines going, the game goes pretty smooth. It does tend to make fights quite a bit easier, but if you're not playing the game for normal dungeon crawl purposes, then party banter is what you'll be wanting.
As for mods, I haven't tried any of them. I never tried mods for NwN1, either. There's dozens of games with mods that I've never taken the time to get installed and running.
