Reminds me of the cool job I had ... Topside watch on an FBM submarine in Rota, Spain walking back to the aft deck to check the draft. I had to walk down the middle of the 16 tubes with all of the hatches open right before we went on patrol one time.
I knew what was on top of those nose cones and they respected the 45 cal strapped to my waist too, because they didn't make a move.
Seriously it was a hoot ... We had lots of algee on the sides of the hull at the water line and these big sucker fish would be eating the stuff.
One night I was so cold, we were next to the sub tender Holland and I made a little tent next to the sail out of plastic wrap and five gallon paint drums that were just sitting there for some reason. It was the mid-watch and I was cold.
All of a sudden I hear the creaking of the gang plank from the tender and I run out of the little tent just in time to see the captain rushing onboard in a hurry saying, "Carry on".
It was fun ... the memories are still intact.
