"in total 655 people have been on the Ceramic,-- saved just one of them".
Somebody tried to save more people once in august 1942.U-156 torpilates the passenger liner Laconia that was sailing under the brittish flag. They sunk the ship,no big deal, but after that they heard italian cries for help.Being allies they had to help them, repported the incident to the commandment, and u-506 and u-507 was sent to help u-156 in its task, along with the italian Capellini. They picked up 800 brittish passengers and 450 italians, reached the limit of their own safety(i guess boiancy)and were due to meet with french warships to give them the passengers.2 american bombers showed up and althou the axis subs harbored the red cross flag, they bombed and gunned, and sucsecvently killed a part of the rescued passengers.
That is why a sub never helps crews or passengers of sinking ships.

The part that i don`t get was why the u-boots attack passenger ships in the first place?
