Maybe we've misunderstood each other.
I thought, by reading...
When I have a destroyer coming at me, ...
... from your first post, that the DD already had detected you and was heading right towards your position.
So my post was written for that special situation.
If he has detected you, then you can run flank at him.
I don't always run flank at DDs, only when they've detected me AND I see a good chance of sinking them.
