You should only go deep as fast as you can.
I usually fired my G7a when the DD is at about 800 - 700 m and wait until the torpedo SHOULD have hit the DD, if not I crash dive.

I've never RUN AT a DD, I'm usually stopped of ahead slow on my own course.
