DON'T CHANGE YOUR COURSE
... after you have fired your eel!!!
The destroyer will notice it and alter his course, too.
You should only go deep as fast as you can.
I always run with max speed at a DD. Then after sending my eel I try to go down to 100m and wait for the impact. If there's no BOOOOM at the given time I quickly change course to 90° port or starboard.
