Not sure about codecs. I use mp3s and .ogg files and don't have any trouble (touch wood ). The best thing to do IMHO is to download Media Coder and batch convert your mp3s into 'ogg format. It allows you to set the average bit-rate, so you have some control over file size / quality.

If you have the time and patience to work on a track-by-track basis I recommend Audacity - it's a free open source audio editor, very sophisticated. I use it for cleaning-up and editing OTR programmes. You can export each file / track as mp3, WAV or .ogg, with sull control over bit-rate.
