There is a big difference, the strait of Gibraltar is DEEP and is also much shorter.

I started a 23rd Flotilla career in Sept 1941 at La Rochelle (GWX, modded Flotilla.cfg file) and I was assigned a patrol square in the Mediterranean, so first I had to pass the straits.

I used the night darkness to approach as much as I could, then at first light I dove at 80m, doing 2-3 kts, and surfaced in the evening on the other side, with little battery and oxygen left, but safe.

Until the escorts have no radar, it is doable. Of course you must forget about attacking all military and merchant targets you will meet.
