Hi Gakun (and aaronblood),
I'm an IT guy and the number of icons on your desktop would not have a measureable effect on your performance. And the actual size of the files on your desktop has absolutely no effect at all on performance
Desktop wallpapers don't eat up that much memory. If your screen resolution is 1280x1024x32 then that works out to a bitmap of nearly 4mb. Not really that much when you probably have 1 or 2 gb of memory.
And also, when you are playing a game fullscreen windows is smart enough to notice nothing has used that chunk of memory for a while and the bitmap for your wallpaper will be paged out to your swapfile so the memory is freed up to be used by your game - you might notice this when you alt-tab back to your desktop or quit the game, windows has to page the wallaper back in and sometimes you may see it actually get drawn. This is a good reason to NOT disable your paging file... if you have then windows can't swap your wallpaper out to disk, meaning you effectively have 4mb less memory available for your game
