I think it's mentioned in Das Boot that the shipyards rated the boats down to 90m. Past about 200m, you were seriously testing the hull integrity. I think you'd be pushing the boundries at 300m, let alone 400m deep.

In order to get away from destroyers, try going down to 150-200m, engage silent running (unless you've got repair teams working) and everytime depth charges are dropped (when the sonarman tells you depth charges in the water - assuming he does) order a random course change (+/-90 degrees) and wait for them to go off. If there's only one destroyer, go to flank speed as soon as the charges are in the water - he's got to go fast to avoid damaging himself and so won't be able to hear you. If there's more than one destroyer, you should probably wait until the charges start exploding to go to flank speed. Use this to give your speed a boost until the charges stop exploding and then go back to silent running.

I've read elsewhere that destroyers that are pinging you are not listening for propellor noises so you can speed up when this happens, but beware! If there are 2x destroyers after you, one can be pinging while the other listens for your propeller.

Using this method, I've managed to get away from most hunters on high realism (ie no stealth meter...), but then I'm only in 1939/1940 so the escorts aren't as good as they get yet!

Good luck!
