I usually fire from 500 or so meters so I have a few seconds to identify flags before I fire tough. I also sometimes use the view contact "cheat" if I'm to lazy to set up for attack without ensuring that it is in fact a valid target

What is the view contact cheat?

Also with people like myself not able to ID the flag from further than 7-800m how are people attacking ships deep in a convoy.....they might be neutral

You may want to look for a mod called 'Big Flags. I never installed it but I think it might, you know, make the flags bigger?
