Capt'n Snuffy was having a stellar career!
He was bringing his crew and his boat home regularly and was at the top of the Aces chart in the home port office.
One mission ago he came back from a patrol around the north Phillipines/Luzon Island area and was offered a "new" sub, a Balo class. To his surprize, instead of being relocated to Pearl for the new boat, command left him in Perth/Freemantle. He crewed up the boat, (most of the guys from his previous boat) and headed out for another trip north of Luzon.
Things went well ... total tonage on the mission was well over 84k and was approaching 90k. He radioed in several sightings of convoys and task forces while returning to port, after completing successfully the two tasks he was given by command on this patrol.
He finally pulls into port to find out that the Navy now considers his new boat to be be obsolete after giving it to him one patrol ago. So the Navy in their infinant (infant?) wisdom opt to retire Capt'n Snuffy as well as his boat.
I started the career as early as I could, spent the whole of the career in the Phillipines area, and at last inspection of the Aces board, had over 600k in destroyed enemy assets. It was mid 43 when he was nailed for retirement.

Oh well.
