Renown is awarded according to a set value, thus a warship of 5000 tons is worth more points than a freighter of 5000. (There is a list of renown points floating around the forums somewhere.)

Also, your level of realism affects the renown, so playing at lower realism gives you less renown for sunk ships.

Patch to version 1.4b if it's not already at that level out of the box,and start looking at the supermods right away as they really make the game shine. (GWX is my personal favourite.)
