It's a simulated sextant reading by performing a CTRL-left mouse click on the map's compase rose. That provides a spot to mark on the map what lat/lon readings you have. Since the .tga file for your sub is made transparent it doesn't show up anymore and the markings are used. I end up making all kinds of notations on the map during patrols to be ready in case the weather turns bad and I no longer am able to measure angles at sunrise/sunset.

Just like the satisfaction of a manual TDC hit on a ship, being able to reach a specific area or intercept a radio contact in the North Atlantic during bad weather is a great feeling too.
