There is a third option in GWX - report "She's going down" and no icon at all,but tonnage as well as renown are still calculated.That usually happens in similar occasions "grey sunk ships icons" appear - when you damage the ship severly,and it still continues to sail along it's route,actually sinking far away from your position.
