Huh? There was no Chechen insurgencies during the cold war
It began in the early 90's, and I find it a disgusting hypocricy on behalf of the West to call them anything but terrorists. Especially given fairly official admissions of many of them being trained by the Taleban in Afghanistan, and the inclusion among them of a large number of volunteer Arab fighters (Al Quaeda, anyone?) And ESPECIALLY after Beslan. I honestly don't see how anyone with any common sense can call them anything remotely justifyable after that.
I wrote a fairly extensive paper on the conflict in university. I'm really annoyed at how far the "our bastards" thing can be taken sometimes.

What I meant was, if the Chechen situation had broken out in 1967, for example, would the United States have called them Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

I think if the Chechen situation had broken out in 1967, by the time Americans heard about it the Red Army would have massacred every man, woman and child in the region then blamed it on the Israelis.
