I respectfully disagree and agree at the same time. I love the newer version, as it includes so much more of the book, but the mechanical whale isn't nearly as good. Of course getting Gregory Peck back to play Father Mapple was a brilliant stroke, and Bruce Spence as Elijah the soothsayer was great (he was the "Gyro Captain" from The Road Warrior, and the pilot with the kid in Beyond Thunderdome). Having a real Islander play Queequeeg didn't hurt, either.
But Peck and Orson Welles are still the best, in my book.
