I get offered a new command about every third patrol. It's just a matter of being within the safe zone for sub availability. Gato = Late '42 - early '43. Balao = mid-late '44 & '45, I believe.
I like the Gato, personally. The only real reason I upgraded from the USS Porpoise is because I wanted more torpedo tubes....
