@ Monolith, when you refer to black screen is this in the menu screens or just in the main 3D game screen?
I must admit that this happened to me (in menus at start) a couple of time long ago & I can't remember what I did, I think it had something to do with drivers & going back to old ones fixed it!
What card do you have nVidia or ATI?
