There are mods that lower the air traffic. As for the kamikaze routine - its actually more deliberate in SH4 than it was in SH3. I never got hit by a plane in SH3 - but with SH4 - if you do enough damage (but not kill) a plane as it dives on you - it will intentionally crash into you. The thinking here is that a pilot - in a badly mauled aircraft - has little to no chance of getting it home and down in one piece. His chances of survival at that point are pretty much gone - so he sacrifices himself to the glory of the emperor.

If you dont want to get kamikaze'd - there are a couple of tricks. One - dont fight it out with an aircraft! Historically the proper choice whenever possible... (For those that dont get it - it means DIVE!!!!). However - for those that are intent of shooting anything with a red ball on it - shoot - but either make sure you can kill the plane far enough out so that it doesnt lose control so close it lands on you - OR do only moderate damage as it comes in and finish it off as it heads away from you. If you do to much damage to it on its attack run - your going to be the final landing strip for that plane....

How much is too much? If its a twin engine - one engine afire and it will attack and pull out. If both engines are on fire - its gonna try and hit you - at that point you better destroy it before its close enough to not matter... As for single engine zekes' - once they engine is on fire - and they are on an attack run - they will try to hit you as well. However - whats odd with them is if they miss (which does happen) they often will smack off the water and circle back for another try.
