Maybe you hit the bottom? The China Sea and Yellow Sea are rather shallow.

And there are a few oddities about the damage model. My sub got damaged mysteriously as well the other day. About the same depth as you (I sail a Gar class). I must have either gotten some damage running aground earlier or because of a run in with a dingy.
