Almost; the DD's mission, is to protect the convoy. From the DD's point of view, if they exhaust all their DCs trying to kill you, but in so doing allow one of your friends into the convoy, they've failed, even if they kill you. If they drive you off, OTOH, takes much less time and DCs, and they can get back on station guarding the convoy and on to their true mission.
