Which was fortunate because the voltage started going back down once the graphics were minimized and it prevented anything from getting zapped.

effect is the same as in my case, you have overvolatge and i have undervoltage, but the effect is same.
I do not know into you mother board monitor, but mine, has a recorded log, a red recorded line is stored for the las 5 or 10 minutes when over or under voltage... may be in yours it is abailable too.
