Don't know about subs but on the surface ships we used to joke that DC was just to keep the water out long enough to launch the boats and rafts. Seriously, its mostly a band-aid to keep the ship functional enough to get to safety. If the damage is serious enough you want to try to get home ASAP. By the way your DC info was very helpful. The manual really doesn't cover damage control enough to be useful.
