I've been looking into rates of fire and in doing so I found Vice Admiral James Calvert USN saying that during the war, when he was a junior officer in the USS Jack, they tried their best to reduce the number of men in a gun's crew, simply to reduce the number of men on deck. For instance, on a 3 inch, the roles of gun captain, pointer and spotter were combined into one, but with a direct intercom connection to the radar operator for assistance in spotting the fall of shell.
