I watched a program on discovery (or something- maybe it was a Horizon program?) which considered the possibility that Titanic and her sister ship, the Olympic, had been switched. Essentially so that the ship could be scuttled to save the White Star line financially by collecting the insurance money.
For certain, many of the pictures you see of the Titanic, in old news reels and photographs, are in actual fact her sister ship; due to the fact that so few pictures of Titanic were taken before she sank. This can be seen quite clearly in a newsreel film where the names of the tugboats have been scratched out from each frame to hide the fact that they are the tugs berthing Olympic in New York, the destination Titanic never made. The same applies to many of the postcards of Titanic.
It was interesting enough, but all of the so called 'evidence' for the switch was remarkably circumstantial. In the words of one of the interviewees: if a switch had taken place at the construction docks, then there's no way that XX thousand irish dock workers would hahve failed to notice, or if they had done, kept quiet about it.
Nice little diversion, but not what you could call definitive proof under any circumstances.
