While there is no denying the magnificence that is GWX, for someone who has never played a subsim before (much less Silent Hunter 3 in its vanilla state) I'm afraid that might be too steep a learning curve. Weren't some of the realism settings "disabled" in that? At least, even with the god's eye map updates on the colors are removed; everything is grey forcing manual identification by you.
