Had one last night west of Loch Ewe. It was about 10:00 AM; seas washing over the conning tower bridge, overcast, and heavy fog. Cruising along at about 5 Kts minding my own business then out of the fog comes a British medium freighter, coming straight on at about 7 kts and about 200 meters range, bearing 0. Not word one from my faithful bridge watch.
In order I:
1. Ordered flank ahead
2. Hard port rudder
3. Called down through the conning tower hatch for a clean pair of shorts.
After shearing off I circled around to go after him, but lost him in the fog. Finally submerged to 50 meters and had my sonar man locate him on the hydrophone.
Came to periscope depth, hit him with one eel fired at about 400 meters range, contact-fused, and running depth set for 3 meters. he went down like a rock.
