The problem with the measures is the accruacy of the thermometers and the protocols used to perform the measures. I m working on climatological datas (T,SST, pressure, ....) and I have records since 1400 for temp but with so big errors that we didn't know what we look at! (data measured = enviromental situation+instrument error+ human error+ 'real' data)
You can have very beautifull plots of temp since 1749 but with no idea of the accruacy so it is useless until end of the WW2.
We consider we have good measurement since 1945-46 and very good since 1979 (with spaceborn instruments).
