Because I play "mostly" realistically (80%) and I can't stand the unreasonable patrol zones given me (Eastern Africa from Willhelmshaven?) I always have limited fuel turned off.
If I were good enough to play 100% realism I could see the extra range of the IX being attractive. But other than the increased range does not the size and the slower dive speed have more of a disadvantage?
Probably not as I know many much more experienced captians than I love the IX.
So to you smart guys, what do you like about the IX besides the increased range?
