After 1942, Midway was more than a stopover base.
Most boats actually began their war patrols from there, returning to Pearl only for drydocking and repairs.
Normal refitting was done at Midway, major overhauls at Mare Island.
Crews naturally hated Midway, a small stretch of sand without women and bars and "other attractions" does not really compare to Waikiki beach.
Same goes for the Marianas after they were taken 1944.
There was a rest camp called "Camp Dealey" on Saipan, where Submariners were to spent their "vacations".
Keep in mind the logistics of the USN were quite developed in 1944, and a major submarine base could be created literally out of nowhere with a few tenders and repair ships
